What are haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum or anus. It is a very common condition which most often causes painless bleeding. When the haemorrhoid is significantly enlarged, patients may suffer symptoms of prolapse such as feeling a lump around the back passage, some discomfort and mild staining of the underwear.

Treatment Options

We offer a holistic approach to the treatment of haemorrhoids including advice regarding appropriate conservative treatment.  Haemorroids can be managed by a variety of techniques including simple conservative measures such as diet modification to excising the haemorrhoid tissue. We will discuss with you the most suitable procedure to manage your haemorrhoids.. The procedures we offer include:

Rubber band ligation, The rubber bands obstructs the blood supply and causes the haemorrhoid to separate from its attachment to the bowel wall. The cure rate is high with a low complication rate.

Excisional haemorrhoidectomy: Involves surgery to remove the haemorrhoidal tissue by cutting it. The cure rate is high with this procedure but the recovery rate is slightly longer.

HAL/RAR: Haemorrhoid Artery Ligation/Recto Anal Repair: utilises a special probe that locates the artery feeding the haemorrhoid, allowing the surgeon to accurately and effectively tie it off. Any enlarged and prolapsed haemorrhoid is also sutured back into place. This leads to shrinkage of the haemorrhoid. This is an alternate technique that can be used in select patients.
